- Until this day, Carolyn has not apologized for the role she played in young Till’s death and has shown no genuine remorse.
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Carolyn Bryant was born in Indianola, Mississippi, in 1934. Her mother worked as a nurse while her father managed a plantation in this segregated town.
- She was a high school dropout and former 2-time beauty pageant winner when she married ex-soldier and white supremacist Roy Bryant.
- Years later, Carolyn and Roy divorced, and she even remarried twice. She had two children with Roy before they went for a divorce.
Career, Profession and Occupation :
- Prior to their separation, Roy and Carolyn had started their grocery shop called Bryant’s Grocery & Meat Market. They mainly catered to black sharecroppers who, along with their families and other black inhabitants of the town, were not allowed to shop in areas designated for white people.
Murder of Emmett Till :
- On August 24, 1955, Emmett Till, a black 14-year-old boy, went to Carolyn and Roy’s store to buy gum. Bryant alleged that Till flirted, grabbed, and threatened her inside the store.
- She told her husband, Roy, and brother-in-law, J.W. Milam, who then ambushed Till when he was asleep at home at 2.30 in the morning on August 28. Bryant and Milam tortured the young boy before lynching him.
- Although the two men were arrested, they were found ‘Not Guilty’ of the murder on September 23, 1955, after a jury consisting of only white men decided to let them off the hook after just a 67-minute deliberation.
- Milam and Bryant later admitted to killing Till after being paid $4000 by Look Magazine. They told their story to the magazine but were never arrested. Neither of the two men showed remorse for their actions.
- In 2007, an author named Timothy Tyson interviewed Carolyn, who confessed that Emmett was innocent and that Carolyn had lied about the entire situation. Vanity Fair published the story 10 years later, on January 26, 2017.
- Despite her lies leading to the death of an innocent teenager, Carolyn has never apologized nor repented and even refused to visit the Emmett Till Interpretive Center which was built in Summer, Mississippi to honor Till. She remains largely in hiding and has made no effort to contribute to a more progressive society.
Interesting Facts, Height and Trivia :
- Till’s death led to many people protesting in outrage and was a big influence in the Civil Rights Movement. During the same year of his death, on December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, who lived in Montgomery, Alabama, made history and sparked a boycott after she refused to sit at the back of a bus as was expected of people of color during racial segregation.
